Donor Spotlight – Kristin and Ryan Glick
New Chapters is blessed with many friends who support our mission through volunteering, in-kind donations and monetary gifts. This month we would like to shine a spotlight on two very special friends who support New Chapters in multiple ways.
Please meet Kristin and Ryan Glick. Both Kristin and Ryan place a high value on the importance of reading and make it a priority within their family. Kristin has been an avid reader her entire life and while Ryan has only taken up the habit as an adult, he has become passionate about the power of literacy. They have been very generous with their time, expertise, and monetary resources to support New Chapters’ mission.
Ryan’s company, Pixelayn Innovations, LLC designed our website and Ryan continues to provide invaluable technical support and advisement.
New Chapters has a new project in the works offering literary support to members of our target audience who are now adults. Ryan has read hundreds of nonfiction books covering topics of motivation, sales/marketing, leadership, and personal growth. He is consulting on our nonfiction book selection. We are exceedingly grateful for Kristin and Ryan and their commitment to New Chapters.
When did you first hear about New Chapters?
We first heard about New Chapters back in the fall of 2018. Ryan was introduced to Stacie to help her re-design the New Chapters website. We’ve been connected ever since.
Why did you first donate to New Chapters?
We’re both avid readers, and we feel it’s important for children to read. New Chapters’ mission to make it possible for at-risk youth to have access to books is awesome. And we wanted to help out in any way possible.
Is there an aspect of the New Chapters’ mission with which you connect more than others?
Making a wide variety of books available to children who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to read.
What do you hope to see regarding New Chapters’ efforts around Des Moines?
It would be interesting to see if there’s an opportunity to provide career and educational guidance to the older children in the facilities. Essentially, turning their habit of reading into a path toward successful entry into college or the start of a career.
What do you tell others about New Chapters?
Stacie and her team are all so passionate about what they do. You can tell that they truly care for the children.
Is there a particular book that has made an impact on you?
Ryan – Lead the Field by Earl Nightingale – I’ve listened to the audiobook dozens of times. It’s a great reminder of the many traits and characteristics necessary to be successful in business and life. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand – it’s a scary reminder of what society could look like if the individual incentive to succeed is completely removed or shared with the collective.
Do you have a special memory that includes a book or reading?
Ryan – I didn’t become an active reader until the last few years. It all started with Relentless by Tim Grover. From there, I’ve navigated hundreds of books. I’m grateful for Kristin’s influence on me because she’s always reading.
Do you have a favorite author and/or book?
Ryan – Napoleon Hill, MJ DeMarco, and Ayn Rand.
Kristin – George R.R. Martin, J.K. Rowling, and Brandon Sanderson.
About New Chapters Libraries
At New Chapters, our collective passion is to inspire a love of books among at-risk youth. We believe that strong reading skills are essential for every child and that a good book can be very therapeutic and offer a ‘vacation’ from the hardships of everyday life.
New Chapters is committed to making a wide variety of current and high-interest books readily available by creating and refurbishing libraries in residential facilities catering to at-risk children. We also conduct programs aimed at fostering a love of books and increasing reading skills.
