2019 Was an Amazing Year!
We added 1,354 new books to our New Chapters Libraries which is well over $13,000 worth of new books! More than 1,200 kids had access to our libraries and many read a book cover to cover for the first time in their lives thanks to the encouragement from our volunteers.
Youth Benefit From Multiple Locations
The same volunteers visit our libraries at Polk County Juvenile Detention Center and Youth Homes of Mid-America every single week and have done so since the inception of those libraries. Many of the boys have been at both facilities and oftentimes, more than once. Quite a few have also been at YESS at some point during the last several years.
Seeing the same volunteers each time brings a sense of familiarity as they are moved around in the system. Our volunteers develop relationships with the kids and our libraries become a place of comfort and refuge.
By having a presence everywhere the kids are placed, we are able to continue to encourage reading and have a better chance of fostering a life long habit.
YESS Bedtime Stories
Did you know…? Our volunteers have been reading bedtime stories to the kids in the nursery at YESS for the past two years.
The evening story time provides important one-on-one quality time with the little ones during the calmest and most quiet time of the day.
Bedtime stories relax the mind, enhance imagination, develop creative thinking, and are a source of inspiration.
Reading Parties in Full Swing
Our reading parties continue to be popular nights with the kids! Our volunteers host the parties at YESS and at Aliber, Bright, and Jacobson/Shiffler libraries at Orchard Place Campus.
The evenings begin with a book related craft, snacks, and a lively discussion about books. The kids love to tell us about books they have enjoyed and offer book recommendations to the other kids.
They then visit the library and check out their next great read! These parties help us get to know the kids and their interests and give us the opportunity to introduce them to books they may not choose on their own.
Orchard Place Campus Library Renovations
Our biggest project in 2019 was the refurbishment of the libraries at Orchard Place Campus. We had the opportunity to visit with the kids to learn what kinds of books they would like to see added to their libraries.
With their suggestions and with the help of our generous donors, we added a total of 900 new books to the shelves.
We remodeled the Jacobson/Shiffler library by adding another set of custom book shelves which doubled the capacity of the Book Nook to offer space for more than 700 books!
First Realty Scholastic Book Fair
The 5th annual Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices First Realty Scholastic Book Fair to benefit the library at Youth Emergency Services and Shelter (YESS) was held in December.
It was extremely successful providing over 300 new books for the shelves and to be given away as birthday gifts to all the kids who celebrate a birthday while at YESS.
We will also be receiving a very generous cash donation from the proceeds to fulfill special requests and fund our reading parties throughout the year at YESS.
We are so grateful to First Realty and their support over the past four years!
We are very excited for 2020 as we plan to expand our reach! New Chapters will be building a new library and expanding to a fifth residential facility to bring the joy of reading to even more youth. Stay tuned for more details as our plans are finalized!
