Meeting The Challenge Of Tough Times

2020 has undoubtedly been a challenging year navigating Covid-19. It has been especially hard on youth without stable home environments. The facilities where our libraries are located had to restrict visitors, eliminate volunteer activities, and suspend outings for the kids. Fortunately, our libraries were well-stocked with a variety of genres and reading levels. Our books provided comfort, entertainment, and much-needed stress relief for many children and teens. We have missed being with the kids in person but have stayed in touch with the staff at each facility and continued to fulfill book requests.

$2000 In New Books For YESS Library

We had the opportunity this fall to perform a complete inventory of our library at Youth Emergency Services and Shelter (YESS). This is our flagship library and the largest by far with an inventory of over 2,200 different titles. We lose books every year, but due to the difficulties of the past several months, numerous kids took a book with them to provide comfort at their next placement. We utilized this opportunity to purchase replacement books for our most popular titles; add books to series that may not have been complete; and purchase new releases. We added over 200 new books with more to come later this fall!

A New Chapter Begins: Harvest Academy

We are happy to announce that Phase One of our newest library located at Harvest Academy is complete. Harvest Academy is a new adult therapeutic community which offers a comprehensive and intensive two year residential program for people with criminal backgrounds, individuals experiencing homelessness, and chronic substance abusers who are highly committed to changing their lives. New Chapters firmly believes that altering the course of an adult life will also positively alter the course of that person’s (present and/or future) children’s lives. Therefore, we are thrilled to support Harvest Academy with an inventory tailored to complement their program. This library has a heavy non-fiction emphasis with books for Personal Growth and Motivation; Sales, Marketing, and Leadership; Inspirational Biographies; as well as “How To” books ranging from cooking and gardening to home maintenance and auto repair. We will expand the selection as new residents arrive and we learn about their personal interests and reading levels.

Looking Ahead: A Library For Dorothy’s House

We are excited to be a contributor to the new house being constructed for Dorothy’s House. If you are not familiar with Dorothy’s House, it is the name given to residential homes that provide a safe place for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation. It is a long term program which provides survivors with the space, resources, and support needed for their healing journey. There are two homes in our area; one needed such extensive repairs, the decision was made to tear it down and begin the building of a new structure. The new home will accommodate more residents and provide badly needed group spaces. New Chapters saw this as an opportunity to get involved and offered to create and furnish a library/study space for the residents. Stay tuned as this important project progresses!

Giving Tree Season Is Upon Us

Each holiday season, Corporate Giving Trees provide new books for our shelves and keep our libraries current. We would like to extend a huge thank you to Palmer Group for initiating this program three years ago and for their continued enthusiasm in supporting New Chapters and the kids we serve. If your organization is looking for an easy, but rewarding holiday project, please email [email protected]. We will provide you with a book wish list and everything you need to set up your physical or virtual Giving Tree!

Scholastic Book Fair Dec. 7-11, 2020

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices First Realty is hosting their 6th annual holiday Scholastic Book Fair to benefit New Chapters Libraries. The event, Dec. 7-11, 2020, will be virtual this year due to Covid-19. If you have book lovers on your Christmas gift list, please consider shopping during this event. The First Realty book fair has grown each year; the proceeds in 2019 were able to cover the cost of supplies, fulfilling special requests as well as inventory replenishment for the YESS library for the entire year! Thank you so much, First Realty, for your unwavering support of literacy and at-risk youth. We will provide information on how to access the fair on our Facebook page in mid-November.
