Polk County Juvenile Detention Center
The Polk County Juvenile Detention Center (PCJD) provides safe and secure detention care for juveniles who require custody, pending legal disposition and placement. The center emphasizes educational services, personal responsibility, accountability, and respect for self and others.
Prior to New Chapters’ involvement, the library at PCJD had shelves that were stuffed with outdated and worn-out books. Our volunteers were given the freedom to refurbish the entire library. Nearly 600 books were purged and then replaced with current, relevant titles, targeted to appeal to the population served at PCDC. To date, New Chapters has donated over 1,000 new books. Our volunteers staff the library one day per week to visit with the kids about books and provide assistance with book selection. Many of the kids come to detention having never read a book cover to cover, but by the time they are released, they have become avid readers.
